Salinization is the progressive accumulation of salts in the soil or growing substrate following repeated fertigation cycles.
In soil cultivation, it can cause a long-term loss of soil fertility. In traditional soilless cultivation substrates, plant growth may also be compromised.
To prevent this, the substrate often needs to be washed repeatedly with large quantities of water, which is then released into the environment carrying accumulated salts.
